Intensity in a session

Before any personal training session can take the next step to becoming more intense one must look at the way in which the exercise is carried out. Is perfect form/technique being utilized? If an exercise is carried out in a way in which damage is occurring to joints/muscles then the long term effectiveness of the program is in jeopardy.

Once correct technique is perfected the amount of energy expelled during each exercise/session needs to be increased. Whether this is done by increasing reps, weight, speed or cardiovascular output the next session should be always harder than the last. This is done so that improvement is made as the body adapts to the increased workload. It needs to be made aware to the client that they need to push themselves to fatigue whilst always being aware of the difference between muscular fatigue and the pain of injury. 

To push through a lactic acid threshold pain, for example, the client must have the mental strength to enable this to take place. The same goes with strength training or training for hypertrophy as the intense nature of training with a specific result in mind can be very mentally taxing but also can be exhilarating as the results are achieved.

Hopefully after all the workouts have increased in intensity the victory or completion of the competition outweighs the pain of the sessions that were carried out.
