| The Body's Ability to Adapt |
The fitness tip for this month is on the body's ability to adapt. I had a client ask me why I constantly change the sessions and why we don't do the same thing every week. Exercise training is an adaptive process. If a muscle is stressed it will adapt and improve it's function. For example a weight lifter will constantly increase the amount of weight they lift or the type of lift they carry out over many sessions so that the muscle is always challenged with new stimulus. This is done so that the muscle doesn't adapt to the exercise and gets stronger and able to lift more therefore increasing size. Larger muscles allow them to accommodate an increased load. Due to the body's ability to adapt a cyclist will increase distance traveled over each ride or intensity of the ride in an attempt to improve performance. This adaptive process is carried on into the training programs for all clients, from sports specific training to weight loss, so that maximum results are achieved. This is how we train all clients and why if a program is given to a client to carry out in their own time we constantly need to modify it or progress will not be made. So that is why my sessions are always challenging my clients and why I always like to ask how the client felt after the last session to gauge what we need to carry out in the session at hand.
